On 27 February the President of the Libyan Presidency Council, Fayez Al-Sirraj and the Commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar met in Abu Dhabi under the mediation of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Ghassan Salame. During their meeting, Sirraj and Haftar agreed on the need “to end the transitional stages in Libya through holding general elections”. The two parts also agreed on unifying the institutions of the country. The spokesman of Al-Sirraj, Mohammed El Sallak added: “Al-Sirraj confirmed in the meeting that there is no military solution in the country and that civilians must be protected at all times.” The UN already suggested to hold the elections on 10 December 2019, but the two leaders did not agree on a specific date yet.
