African Union summit on Libya
On 23 April, the Egyptian President, also President of the African Union (AU), Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, hosted the AU summit to discuss the current conflict in Libya, in Cairo. A number of African leaders attended including Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, the Republic of Congo’s Denis Sassou and South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa. Stating that the conflict in Libya has a harmful impact on the rest of the African states, the leaders declared that Libya needs an urgent political solution to regain its unity and stability. They aim to restore the role of the Libyan National Army to preserve the peace and end the current chaos caused by armed militias, terrorism, and foreign interventions. Amid their call to the UN envoy to Libya to cooperate with the AU in a transparent way, they also called for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire, stressing the need to secure safe access for humanitarian aid in troubled areas. The summit was organized in parallel of another emergency summit to discuss the situation in Soudan.
