Additional funding in the framework of the EU Facility for Refugees in Turkey
The EU reported the progress in the implementation of the Facility for Refugees in Turkey, the financial aid programme launched in 2015 to support refugees sheltered in Turkey. New contracts have recently been signed in order to improve the current situation of those displaced by Middle East conflicts. The contracts are worth over €100 million and they are expected to reach 1.3 million refugees. The new projects are focusing on creating new infrastructure, providing professional education and improving health conditions in the camps. This new funding comes in a context in which Turkish authorities criticised the EU for allegedly not complying with their part of the agreement on refugee camps. The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has reasserted that the EU will fully respect the agreement: “I would like to be very clear. We have promised €3 billion for the refugee program and another €3 billion to Turkey for the coming years. This decision of the EU will be respected fully.” He has also blamed Turkey for the worsening of their relations, pointing than Ankara is stepping away from European ideals. “We want Turkey to re-become European”, he said.
