Abbas refuses Israel taxes’ transfer after Israel’s decision to freeze part of the money
On 20 February PA’s president Mahmoud Abbas announces that Palestinians would not accept any taxes’ transfer from Israel after that Israeli Security Council decided to block part of the money. In June 2018 Israeli Parliament approved a law to block part of the PA’s funds claiming that the Palestinian government allocated that money to families of the Palestinians imprisoned by Tel Aviv’s authorities. On 18 February the Israeli Security Council actuated the Knesset’s decision. Israeli authorities collect about $175 million each month from Palestinian import – export activities and according to international agreements it should transfer those funds to Palestinian authorities. That revenue represents the main source for the PA. Mahmoud Abbas declared that “the PA will continue to pay welfare money to families of prisoners and martyrs”. Bassam al-Salhi, a member of PLO, stated that Israel “acts in flagrant disregard for international laws and conventions”. On 21 February the EU tried to mediate between the two parties and invited the PA “to continue accepting the tax transfers on a provisional basis – because – a functioning PA that delivers health, education and security to millions of Palestinians is in the interest of both Palestinians and Israelis”.
