5th meeting between IMF and Tunisia
From 27 March to 9 April a delegation of the International Monetary Fund visited Tunisia in order to discuss the economic reforms plan in the framework of IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Tunisia. During their visit, IMF’s representatives, led by Bjorn Rother, met Tunisian PM Yousself Chahed, the Governor of the Tunisian Central Bank Marouane Al-Abassi and a delegation of Civil Society members. Several aspects of the Tunisian economy were at the center of the meetings: the high rate of unemployment, the economic and political instability and its consequences for the Tunisian economic system’s dynamicity. The IMF’s statement following the visit reads: “The authorities’ efforts to support growth by containing inflation and stabilizing public debt are starting to bear fruit, but the economy remains frail”. At the end of this statement, the IMF’s staff stated that more time is needed in order to provide more details of the IMF’s policy proposals for Tunisia. The IMF looks attentively at the political situation in Tunisia considering that in autumn 2019 the country will hold both Parliamentary and Presidential elections.
