Turkish and US armies start their joint ground patrol in north-east Syria
On 9 September, Turkish and US troops started their joint operations in the Syrian border, as agreed during the last months. After several diplomatic efforts between Ankara and Washington, the two allies started their first military activity in the so-called “safe zone” along the Turkish-Syrian border, in an area under Kurdish control. The “safe zone” comprehends 30 kilometres and the operations were carried on with ground vehicles and helicopters. These joint patrols aim to avoid tensions between Turkey and Syrian Kurdish fighters, who were US main allies in the fight against ISIS. In fact, the US accepted to collaborate after Turkey threatened to launch a new military operation over the region. On the other hand, the Syrian government condemned these activities as a “flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic”.
