4,432 people arrived to Europe by sea last January, according to IOM
According to a new report released on 28 January by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 4,432 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in January. At least 68 people, including women and children, lost their lives in the sea in the same period; most of them, in the Aegean see. The Eastern Mediterranean route, linking Turkey to Greece, is in fact the main route for maritime migration with a total of 1,939 arrivals between 1 and 22 January. Further, IOM Greece declared that about 45% of the arrivals in 2019 were Afghans, while the second country of origin for migrants was Syria, with 16,019 arrivals. Other source countries for this route were Iraq, Palestine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
