2 days after the anniversary of the Revolution, a general strike paralyzed Tunisia
On 15 January Tunisia celebrated the 8th anniversary of the Jasmine Revolution. A number of celebrations took place. President Essebsi delivered a speech in Bardo Museum in which he renewed his call to the Government to renew its efforts to improve the situation of young people and address the high rate of unemployment. 8 years after the revolution, the country is facing a major economic and social crisis. The UGTT, the main trade union, participated in the celebrations and organized a major mobilisation on 17 January in order to protest against austerity measures.
