1,246 people have died in the Mediterranean during 2019
104,644 migrants have reached Europe by sea until 11 December 2019, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a 6% decrease with respect to the same period of 2018. Arrivals to Greece (58,571) and Spain (25,759) combined account for 80% of the total, while the balance for Italy (11,097), Malta and Cyprus is much smaller. Up until 11 December, 1,246 people have lost their lives trying to cross the Mediterranean, a significant reduction from the 2,219 deaths that took place during the same period in 2018. On 10 December, a shipwreck off the coast of Maghnia, Algeria, claimed the lives of seven people, but only the remains of one were recovered.
