Workshop

Tunisia and Egypt: Promoting Democratic Reform in the Mediterranean

2 March 2011
Barcelona

Pro-democracy demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt and the departure of Presidents Ben Ali and Mubarak have gathered momentum for the democratic movement in the Mediterranean countries.

Legal and political reforms now enter a crucial phase and the consolidation of democracy in both countries and throughout the region will depend on the dynamics that will follow popular demands. European policies can contribute to this transition period and build a solid basis for the establishment of democratic political systems.

This workshop organised by EuroMeSCo and IEMed in collaboration with CEPS explored the dynamics of democratic transitions in Tunisia and Egypt and the changing dynamics of Euro-Mediterranean politics in view of recent developments in both countries.
