|Conference: "New Generation Nuclear: From Policy to Implementation?"|
17 November 2008 - 18 November 2008
International conference organised by Chatham House, with the sponsorship of EDF Energy, GE-Hitachi, and Westinghouse.
The speed with which nuclear energy has re-established itself in the developed world as a credible option to address the twin challenges of secure and environmentally-acceptable energy supplies is remarkable. After twenty years, during which new orders more or less withered outwith the Asia-Pacific region, new reactors have recently been ordered in Finland and France, license applications are currently being made in the USA, and a range of other countries, including the UK, are considering a move back towards nuclear energy.
This event considered questions such as: Why this change? Is it realistic? What obstacles does the industry face? What lessons can be learned about the first major expansion phase within nuclear technology? What were its successes and failures? And how can those lessons be applied to the situation the world now finds itself in with regard to energy supplies?
