The third preparatory meeting of the EuroMeSCo Annual Conference was held on 21-23 September 2006, in Meknès, Morocco, on the topic of “Civil Society, Human Rights and Democracy”. Organised by the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches en Sciences Sociales (CERSS), from Rabat in cooperation with the EuroMeSCo Secretariat at the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (IEEI), from Lisbon, and with the support of the European Commission, the objective of this seminar was to foster the debate on the different perspectives about the importance of human rights and democracy in the future of the Barcelona Process, while trying to identify what should be the priorities in this domain for the Partnership.
The audience of about 150 people consisted of a mix of practitioners, politicians, journalists, researchers and activists mainly originating from countries in the Maghreb, who actively contributed to the debates during the five plenary sessions and the four working groups.
