The European University Institute (EUI) was set up in 1972 by the six founding Member States of the European Communities to provide advanced academic training to doctoral researchers and to promote research at the highest level. It carries out research in a European perspective in Economics, Law, History and Civilization, and the Political and Social Sciences.

Objectives of the Euromed/Middle East programme(s)
The Mediterranean Programme organises the annual Mediterranean Research Meeting which brings together around 200 researchers who spent three days in around 18 workshops dealing with inter-disciplinary issues around the Mediterranean. The programme also set up a loose network of young researches working on the issue of “Religion in the Public sphere” and “new religions trends and practices” in the Mediterranean World, trying to connect the evolution of all the religious movements involves in the area and not only Islam.

The Mediterranean Programme is also connected to the ReligioWest Project, based in the EUI and dedicated to the study of “the formatting of religions in the West”.
